French jazz guitarist Nguyên Lê plays an hour of improvised fusion with Canadian bassist Chris Jennings and the Alyn Cosker Trio at Drygate Brewing Co., part of Celtic Connections.
Nguyên Lê is playing Drygate Brewing Co. on Sunday 17 January, as part of Celtic Connections. He's joined by Canadian double bassist Chris Jennings and Scotland's Alyn Cosker Trio, with support opening the night. It's an hour of improvisation and musical conversation between three voices that don't usually cross paths.
Lê is a French guitarist, composer and jazz innovator who builds his sound from jazz, rock and Vietnamese musical traditions. He's known for blending jazz with global influences, and he brings a dazzling technique and a clear lyricism to the mix. Jennings is an acclaimed Canadian double bassist with a supple tone and a rhythmic assurance that lets him weave intricate melodic lines through driving grooves. Alyn Cosker, the drummer, plays with explosive energy and precision, and he's a master improviser.
Together they're playing an adventurous hour of improvisation, virtuosity and musical conversation. The whole thing is part of Celtic Connections, and it's a one-off meeting of three players from very different backgrounds. The set starts with support, and the main act takes over from there. It's a free gig, so you can just turn up and listen.
