Contemporary folk-rock group Madra Salach perform live at SWG3 Galvanizers in Glasgow.
Madra Salach play SWG3 on Monday 5 April, their first Glasgow date since they signed to Island Records. They're a six-piece contemporary folk-rock group from Dublin, and the set will pull from their own writing alongside a curated collection of folk standards.
The band came together from Dublin's indie scene, where the members had crossed paths in different outfits and bonded over a shared love of the Irish traditional canon — a friendship that started as impromptu pub sessions. They describe their sound as taking inspiration from the growing experimental folk scene in Ireland, and they've added members, instruments and electronic elements to start writing and composing their own material. The result is a sound they describe as strikingly modern in its themes yet written in a voice that could have emerged at any point throughout the last century.
Their debut EP, It's a Hell of an Age, came out on 26 January and blended original songs with reimagined traditional material, reaching No. 3 in Ireland and the UK Independent Albums Top 10. Since then, they've been building momentum through festival appearances and sold-out headline tours across Ireland and the UK. They're also working on a collaboration, the album The Songs of Shane MacGowan, due 26 November, which features Bruce Springsteen, Primal Scream and Lisa O'Neill.
