American multi-genre band Lake Street Dive headline The Barrowland Ballroom.
Lake Street Dive play The Barrowland Ballroom on Sunday 25 October, their only Glasgow date this autumn. They're an American multi-genre band, and the night is a headline show with them as the sole bill.
To get a sense of where they come from, you have to go back to 2004. The members met as students at Boston's New England Conservatory of Music, and they were all studying jazz at the time. But while that's where they started, it isn't what defines them. Their work together has always been shaped by a shared love of classic 1960s pop, and the names that come up are the ones that practically built the era: The Beatles, The Supremes, Dusty Springfield and The Beach Boys. It's that pop sensibility, rather than the jazz they were learning in class, that sits at the heart of their sound.
That background explains a lot about how they work. They're a band that grew out of a music college, so there's a technical foundation there, but they've spent the years since steering it towards the kind of songwriting and arrangement that comes from those sixties records. It's a sound that sits across a few different genres rather than sticking to one, which is why they're hard to pin down to a single label.
