Neo-classical-post-punk duo KatzPascale headline The Poetry Club at SWG3, blending cello and saxophone in an immersive sound world.
KatzPascale play The Poetry Club at SWG3 on Sunday 25 October, the first date of a three-night tour that takes them on to Manchester, Bristol and London. They're a New York City duo, Sammi Katzmann and Jenna Pascale, and the whole thing is built around two instruments: the cello and the saxophone. The cello brings a haunting warmth, the saxophone a soulful, expressive tone, and both run through loop and effect pedals. They treat the voice as another instrument too, drawing on classical and contemporary idioms in equal measure.
They describe themselves as a neo-classical-post-punk-anti-pop duo, and that mix tells you a fair bit about where they sit. The classical side comes through in the cello and saxophone, the post-punk in the way they loop and process those sounds, and the anti-pop in the textures they build. It's less about traditional song structures and more about the sound itself.
On stage, their shows typically open in silence, with dim lighting and evocative spatial design guiding the audience through immersive sound worlds that prize feeling over formalism. It's a setup that asks you to listen closely rather than just follow a beat, and the focus stays on the atmosphere they build around them. The Glasgow date is the first of the three-night run, with Manchester, Bristol and London to follow.
