Concert by the Brooklyn indie rock artist Joan As Police Woman at Oran Mor.
Joan As Police Woman plays Òran Mór on Monday 9 November, with the show starting at 7:00pm. It's the solo project of Joan Wasser, who you might know from her time with Antony & The Johnsons and The Rufus Wainwright Band. She describes her own sound as 'punk-rock RnB' or 'American Soul Music', and the two labels tell a fair bit of the story: she draws as much from Al Green and Isaac Hayes as she does from The Smiths and Siouxsie Sioux. It's a broad reach, and the music is intended to reflect day-to-day life and the genuine depth behind the problems people face.
Wasser's spent the last few years working in a few different directions. During lockdown she put out new music, including her second album of covers and her first live album. She also appeared on Afel Bocoum's Lindé (World Circuit) and wrote and recorded 'Simplicity' with Damon Albarn for the Gorillaz Song Machine album. A new studio album was expected in Autumn 2021 via PIAS, with sessions that began in Paris in November 2019 alongside Afrobeat legend Tony Allen.
