Concert Number 25 of the Glasgow Bach Cantata Project, bringing the glory of J.S. Bach's 200+ cantatas to Glasgow with performances of BWV 27, 95 and 127.
The Glasgow Bach Cantata Project returns to St Bride's Episcopal Church on Saturday 7 November, with Concert Number 25. The evening brings together three of Bach's cantatas: BWV 27, Wer weiร, wie nahe mir mein Ende?; BWV 95, Christus, der ist mein Leben; and BWV 127, Herr Jesu Christ, wahr' Mensch und Gott. Musical direction is shared between Michael Bawtree and Frik Op de Beeck.
The project itself started in 2022 with a pretty bold aim: to bring the glory of Bach's 200-plus cantatas to Glasgow. It's a long-term venture that gathers some of the best players and singers from across the city and beyond to perform as many of those cantatas as possible over the coming years. This is the twenty-fifth concert in that sequence, so it's a good way to see how the project is moving through the catalogue.
There's a particular way this one works, too. Every performer gives their time for free, and whatever is collected at the door goes to Glasgow City Mission, the city's oldest charity working with people experiencing homelessness. So, while the music is the main draw, the whole thing doubles as a fundraiser for a local cause.
