Echo and the Bunnymen celebrate nearly five decades of music history with a concert at the historic Barrowland Ballroom.
Echo and the Bunnymen play The Glasgow Barrowland Ballroom on Tuesday 22 December, their only Glasgow date that winter. It's a late-December gig, so it'll be one of the last live nights of the year for many of us.
They're a Liverpool band formed around frontman Ian McCulloch, and they've been at it for over forty years now. They're described as pioneers of the post-punk era and one of the most influential British bands in modern history, and you can hear that in the names they've left a mark on. The early records — Crocodiles, Heaven Up Here, Porcupine and Ocean Rain — are the ones that filtered down to bands like Coldplay, The Killers, The Flaming Lips and Hole. If you've only ever heard the singles, those four albums are where the sound really sits.
They didn't stop there, though. The later albums — Evergreen, What Are You Going To Do With Your Life?, Siberia and Meteorites — kept the output going long after the post-punk label had faded. Between the early records and the newer ones, they've put out nine top-20 albums, so there's a fair bit of ground to cover. The set will likely draw from both ends of that timeline, the early material they're known for alongside the more recent stuff.
