Award-winning theatre company Jordan & Skinner bring their original physical theatre and comedy to the Citizens Theatre, exploring the history of Monopoly.
Jordan & Skinner are bringing Do Not Pass Go to the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow from Thursday 5 to Saturday 7 November. It's a new play from the award-winning physical theatre and comedy duo, run by Melanie Jordan and Caitlin Skinner, and it takes a look at the story behind one of the world's most popular board games and the woman who actually created it: Lizzie Magie.
Magie was a feminist, economist, disruptor and games designer who invented The Landlord's Game. It came with two sets of rules, designed to let players experience wealth distribution as an alternative to capitalist greed. The design was later stolen by another gamemaker, Charles Darrow, who repurposed it into the Christmas Day wrecker we know as Monopoly, making Darrow the first millionaire games designer in history. The production brings the company's signature irreverent style of physical theatre and comedy to that overlooked chapter of history.
It's a collaborative piece, too. The show was adapted by Joanna Bowman, with music and lyrics by KT Tunstall, and directed by Anthony Almeida, Vicky Featherstone and Kash Arshad. Every performance is delivered in BSL and English, with integrated BSL performed by a member of the cast, and it's recommended for ages 14+.
