Burns Night show of supergroups covering Talking Heads and David Byrne songs and recitals of Robert Burns' verse at the Old Fruitmarket.
David Byrne's Night comes to The Old Fruitmarket on Monday 25 January 2027, with special guests on the bill. The night is built around a rather odd shared heritage: Robert Burns, Scotland's national poet, and David Byrne, the Talking Heads frontman who was born in Dumbarton. It's a pairing you wouldn't naturally put together, but that's exactly where the whole thing gets its pull.
The format is straightforward. Supergroups made up of musicians from the indie, punk and experimental scenes take on Talking Heads and David Byrne-adjacent hits, with recitals of Burns' verse woven in between. The house band changes from night to night, and there are playful theatrical touches throughout, so no two performances ever come out quite the same. It's a live show that changes depending on who's on stage, rather than a set list played the same way every time.
It started in 2023 at Hackney's MOTH Club, founded by Maddy O'Keefe and Dundee native Lola Stephen. From there it grew into one of London's most talked-about live music nights, selling out in days and building a four-digit waitlist. This Glasgow date falls on Burns Night itself, and the show has grown alongside the 40th anniversary of Stop Making Sense, which has turned the whole thing into a cultural moment of its own.
