A concert by Henry Wagons and The Tennessee Studs recreating the music of Johnny Cash's American Recordings albums.
Henry Wagons brings CASH: A Journey Through The American Recordings to Cottiers on Sunday 23 May 2027. He's fronting the show with his band, The Tennessee Studs, and the whole thing is a tribute to the American Recordings albums Johnny Cash recorded with Rick Rubin between 1996 and 2006.
Those records were the final chapter of Cash's career, and they're exactly what Wagons is drawing from here. He's an Australian outlaw country figure with a brooding baritone, often called the 'Man in Black' himself, and he's spent the last quarter century playing his own brand of gothic country. He's credited those albums with inspiring him to pick up the guitar in the first place, so this is a bit of a full-circle moment.
The set recreates the sonic depth and emotional poise of those records. You'll hear the covers Cash recorded during that period — Neil Diamond's 'Solitary Man', Sting's 'I Hung My Head', Nick Cave's 'The Mercy Seat', Nine Inch Nails' 'Hurt' and U2's 'One' — alongside some of his earlier favourites. It's a long way from the early Sun recordings, leaning into the starker, more stripped-back sound of his later years.
