All-female Irish trad supergroup BIIRD and five-piece trad outfit HEISK bring an electric live show to Celtic Connections at the Old Fruitmarket.
BIIRD are playing The Old Fruitmarket on Friday 15 January, as part of Celtic Connections 2027. They're sharing the bill with HEISK, so it's a double bill of trad on the one night.
BIIRD is an all-female Irish trad supergroup formed in 2024, and they're a big outfit — eleven people on stage. They describe their sound as taking the spirit of a traditional session and moving it into a concert setting: driving fiddles, soaring harps, delicate flutes and modern synths, all held together by powerful percussion. You can hear that combination on The Rollover. They've built up a cult following playing the pub session on global stages before they'd even put a record out, and this is that same live energy brought to a proper venue.
Opening the night are HEISK, a five-piece trad outfit that blends accordion, fiddle, electro harp, kit and keys. They work with traditional tunes and their own writing, twisting both into something they describe as fresh and fierce. Between the two, you've got a good range of the trad sound across the evening, from the larger ensemble of BIIRD down to the five-piece of HEISK.
