Alabama 3 return for two headline shows at King Tut's, performing their debut album, follow-up album and greatest hits.
Alabama 3 are back at King Tut's Wah Wah Hut on Friday 6 November, one of two headline shows they're playing at the venue. If you've only ever known them as the band behind 'Woke Up This Morning', that's a good place to start. The song is the opening theme for The Sopranos, and it's turning 25 this year. It's a track that sits on both their 1997 debut, Exile On Coldharbour Lane, and its follow-up, La Peste, and they'll be playing both of those records in full alongside a selection of their greatest hits.
That's a fair bit of ground to cover in one night. Exile On Coldharbour Lane was their debut, and La Peste followed it, so you'll hear the early years in their entirety rather than just a few scattered tracks. The greatest hits on top of that should fill in the gaps, so it's a set that looks back across their career as much as it focuses on those first two records.
For context, Alabama 3 are a British band from Brixton, London, founded in 1995. They built their following by mixing country, blues, gospel and acid house — a combination that puts them in a category of their own. That blend of Americana and dancefloor beats is what 'Woke Up This Morning' came out of, and it's the sound that runs through those first two albums. If you've only ever heard the one song, these two records are where it all started.
