A collection of intimate documentaries from the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival, exploring survival and resilience in conflict zones, followed by a discussion with filmmakers.
Acts Of Survival comes to The Social Hub Glasgow on Saturday 24 October, from 2:30pm to 4:30pm. It's a collection of intimate documentaries presented as part of the Focus on Film programme of the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival, which returns for its 20th year with the theme 'Reflections'.
The films follow people across Syria, Ukraine, Gaza and Kosovo, where, in the shadow of war, displacement and occupation, survival becomes an act of creativity and resistance. They look at friendship, collective care, technological innovation and the courage to speak out, showing how grief and trauma can be turned into compassion, connection and hope. It's a heavy subject, but the focus is on how people keep going and find ways to look after one another when things fall apart.
Once the screening is over, there's a discussion with the filmmakers, co-presented by Counterpoint Arts. It's a chance to hear from the people who made the films and talk through what they've captured, so you're not just watching and leaving — there's space to sit with it afterwards.
