ABBA tribute band Abbageddon turns the group's biggest pop hits into a loud, riff-loaded metal show at Ivory Blacks.
Abbageddon play Ivory Blacks on Sunday 24 October, bringing their metal take on ABBA to the city centre. It's a straightforward premise: they take the biggest songs from the pop catalogue and give them a full-volume makeover, swapping the synthesised sheen for huge guitars, pounding drums, and massive vocals, while keeping the original hooks intact.
The set runs through the classics, and it's a long list. You'll hear Dancing Queen, Mamma Mia, Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!, Waterloo, Voulez-Vous, SOS, The Winner Takes It All, Lay All Your Love on Me, Super Trouper and Take a Chance on Me, all reworked into a loud, theatrical, riff-loaded live show. The band frames it as "ABBA... but heavier. Much heavier", a style they describe as mixing disco and distortion, sequins and studs.
If you're familiar with the original songs, you'll recognise the melodies and the choruses, but the arrangement is a different animal. The pop hooks are still there, just played with a metal band behind them rather than a disco orchestra. It's a night that puts those songs in a completely different context, so if you've heard them a thousand times, this is one way to hear them differently.
