Cinema classic screening of John Cassavetes' A Woman Under the Influence, followed by a discussion on the historical representation of women's mental health in film, as part of the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival.
Glasgow Film Theatre is screening A Woman Under the Influence on Sunday 8 November, as part of the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival 2026. It's a 1974 American film directed by John Cassavetes, with Gena Rowlands in the lead role of Mabel Longhetti, a housewife and mother struggling with severe mental health issues. Peter Falk plays her husband, Nick.
It's widely considered one of Cassavetes' masterpieces, and Rowlands' performance is the thing everyone talks about — described as electrifying and risky, she carries the weight of the film. The story centres on Mabel's emotional distress and the volatile domestic conflict that builds around her, so it's a heavy one. It's recommended for ages 15 and over.
The screening sits within the festival's Focus on Film programme, and it doesn't end when the credits roll. There's a discussion afterwards on the historical representation of women's mental health in cinema, so you'll have a chance to talk through what you've just watched with other people in the room rather than just heading straight back out into the street.
