A Certain Ratio celebrate the anniversary of their classic albums Sextet and Force with a live concert, playing both albums in full across two sets.
A Certain Ratio play Òran Mór on Thursday 15 October, with the show starting at 7:00pm. It's a double-album night: they're playing Sextet (1982) and Force (1986) in full, spread across two sets with no support act. If you've got the records, you know the two they're talking about; if you don't, they're the two that define the band's early run.
Sextet was their debut, and it spent eleven weeks at number one on the UK independent chart, giving us 'Lucinda' and the live favourite 'Knife Slits Water'. Force came four years later, recorded at Yellow 2 and produced by the band with the late Stuart (Jammer) James. It was their last album for Factory Records and a commercial hit that peaked at number two, with 'Mickey Way' and 'Si Firmo O Grido' as the singles. Hearing them both played through in one night puts the two side by side.
For context, A Certain Ratio formed in 1978 around Jez Kerr, Martin Moscrop and Donald Johnson, emerging from the Manchester punk scene as one of the first acts to record for Tony Wilson's Factory Records. They earned a reputation as the godfathers of punk-funk, pulling funk, jazz, electronics, tape loops and technology into the pop song and wrapping them in a post-punk aesthetic. They worked with a disregard for the boundaries of style and genre that's influenced everyone from Talking Heads to LCD Soundsystem.
