Trio of Earrings Workshop

Leith Jewellery Studios are running a silver earring workshop at Out Of The Blue Drill Hall on Saturday 21 November, from 10.30am to 4pm. It's a hands-on session for complete beginners, so you don't need any previous experience to join in. Over the course of the day, you'll make three different styles of silver earrings: classic studs, stylish hoops and elegant drops. You'll walk away with a full set of your own making rather than just one pair.

Because it's a beginner's class, you'll be taught the basic techniques from the ground up. That means sawing, forming, soldering, polishing and texturing metal — the kind of skills you'd usually only see from the other side of the bench. By the time you finish the three pairs, you'll have a decent handle on how to work with silver, from the initial cut to the final polish.

The workshop is held at Out Of The Blue Drill Hall, 36 Dalmeny Street, Leith EH6 8RG. The Drill Hall is the hub of Out of the Blue, an independent cultural social enterprise that's one of Scotland's leading community and arts development organisations. Its mission is to give artists and others who face barriers to creativity a place to meet, work, learn and develop skills, and then pass them on to the local community. The trust behind it, Out of the Blue Arts and Education Trust, is a company limited by guarantee with charitable status and two trading subsidiaries, The Bongo Club Ltd and Out of the Blue Productions. The Drill Hall hosts a wide range of activities run by local makers and artists, including workshops, exhibitions, markets and events.

It's a full day's work, running from 10.30am to 4pm, and costs £120. You'll leave with three pairs of silver earrings you made yourself.
