A female-led reimagining of A Christmas Carol set in contemporary Edinburgh, marking the first collaboration between amateur companies Leitheatre and Forth Children's Theatre.
The Tale of Eliza Scrooge runs at the Church Hill Theatre from Wednesday 25 to Saturday 28 November, with evening shows at 7.30pm from Wednesday to Friday and a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. It's a female-led reimagining of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, written and directed by Lewis C. Baird and put on by two amateur companies, Leitheatre and Forth Children's Theatre. This is the first time the two have collaborated, and the production is part of Leitheatre's 80th anniversary celebrations.
The story moves the action from Victorian London to contemporary Edinburgh. Eliza Scrooge is a ruthless retail CEO whose relentless pursuit of profit has left her feared by her employees and isolated from everyone around her. On Christmas Eve, the ghost of her late business partner, Jessica Marley, appears with a chilling warning, and Eliza is forced to confront the life she's chosen, guided by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come. It's Dickens' themes of greed, compassion and redemption run through the lens of modern Scotland, and the tagline sums it up: 'One Woman. Three Spirits. A Reckoning in the Winter Dark.'
