A darkly humorous, raw one-woman play by Hjarta, performed at Summerhall as part of the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival.
The Rhinestone Cowboy comes to Summerhall on Saturday 24 October, as part of the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival. It's a one-woman play written and performed by Hjarta, and it's a raw, darkly humorous piece of theatre that doesn't shy away from the harder stuff. The story is based on a true account written by a real-life mother-and-son duo, and it follows a young man's turbulent journey from Scotland to Iceland.
What makes it more than just a monologue is the multimedia setting. Composer and audiovisual artist Harry Bongo has built a diverse environment around Hjarta's performance, with pulsating electronic sound design that draws on music from contemporary artists. That sound is fused with bold visual projections, so the backdrop shifts and breathes along with the story. It's a visceral way of bringing the internal world of the play out into the room.
At its heart, the show is a tribute to Dan The Man. It celebrates a kaleidoscopic life whose humour, charm and resilience masked internal demons, and it's that tension between the outward face and the private struggle that gives the play its weight. The Herald described it as 'an unflinching portrait... a moving experience'.
