New play by Scottish writer Linda McLean, co-produced with Dundee Rep and Tron Theatre, about a fifteen-year-old orphan who is offered a job and a train ticket.
The Ferry runs at the Traverse Theatre from 9 to 20 March 2027. It's a new play by Scottish playwright Linda McLean, who you might know from The Long Drop at the Citizens Theatre. The production is directed by Jemima Levick, the Artistic Director of the Tron Theatre, and comes from an original idea by Paul Rattray.
The story is set in Broughty Ferry and follows Freddy, fifteen and newly orphaned. He's offered a job and a train ticket from Glasgow to Dundee by a new acquaintance, Chris, and ends up in the place his mum always spoke about — somewhere life might have been different. There he meets Darren, a recovering heroin user caring for his dad Rab, whose dementia is getting worse, while his aunt June does what she can to look out for them.
McLean draws on her own upbringing on housing estates for the play, and it works its way through family, grief, and exploitation. At its heart is the relationship between care and control, and the ways vulnerability can be exploited under the guise of opportunity and support. It's a co-production between Dundee Rep Theatre, Tron Theatre, and Traverse Theatre, and it's accompanied by an outreach programme engaging young people and communities in each city it visits.
