Script-in-hand performance of the new play by Dr Steven Maxwell, a fundraiser for the mental health charity Arkordia.
Arkordia is bringing The Borrowed Room to Paterson's Land on Friday 23 October, from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. It's a new play by the Scottish writer and academic Dr Steven Maxwell, and this particular showing is a script-in-hand performance, which means the actors keep their scripts in hand rather than memorising the lines. Adam Tomkins and Mark Kydd take the roles.
The story centres on Graham, a journalist living in a small Scottish coastal town who's writing an article on why some people leave. The bulk of the play is his interview with Ewan, a former resident and an old friend. From there it works its way into masculinity, memory and belonging — the kind of things that come up when two old friends sit down and really talk about why one stayed and the other went.
It's not a first-time outing, either. The Borrowed Room has already run at various venues across Edinburgh and Glasgow, and this is being staged as a fundraising event for Arkordia, a local charity that provides mental health services to people on low incomes. All proceeds go to support their work, so whatever you give goes straight into their activities.
