A one-and-a-half-hour street band workshop led by Oi Musica, where participants learn a piece by ear and discover how street bands work.
Oi Musica are leading a street band workshop at the Traverse Theatre on Saturday 28 November, part of the Soundhouse series. It's a ninety-minute session that runs from 11:00, with doors opening at 10:45, and it's held in Traverse 2.
The session is built around the basics of street band playing: you'll learn a piece of music by ear rather than from a score, and get a feel for how street bands actually work. It's aimed at challenging and inspiring group playing, so it's as much about the process as the result. The focus is on the fun of making music in a group, and you'll come away with a better understanding of the street band format.
Oi Musica are street band specialists, known across the UK for their inventive live performances and inclusive education work. They're also the creators of the double award-winning youth project Brass Blast, so they've spent a lot of time working with people of all levels. The workshop is open to both beginner and experienced drummers, and samba drums are provided on the day, so you don't need to bring your own. Brass and reed players, however, should bring their own instrument.

The session sits within a wider series of new live, in-person gigs by the Soundhouse Organisation at the Traverse Bar, which brings a range of global jazz, country, traditional and folk acts to the venue. Tickets are £16–£26, and the workshop runs for an hour and a half on Saturday morning.
