Award-winning multi-instrumentalist Malin Lewis performs live at the Traverse Theatre as part of the Soundhouse Winter Festival.
Malin Lewis plays the Traverse Theatre on Monday 30 November, as part of the Soundhouse Winter Festival. They're an award-winning multi-instrumentalist whose sound is described as bold and vibrant, clear and delicate, and they'll be joined on stage by Sally Simpson on fiddle and Ali Hutton on guitar.
Lewis works with a self-made bagpipe and a one-of-a-kind two-octave smallpipe, and the music draws on European folk traditions, queerness and the universe. Their debut album, Halocline, came out in May 2024 on Hudson Records. A halocline is the visible layer that forms between salt and fresh water, and Lewis uses it as a metaphor for their trans identity and for living in a space between binaries.
They cite Martyn Bennett, Duncan Chisholm and Sharron Shannon as influences, and have toured the UK, Canada and Europe. Beyond the stage, they've recorded music for The Outrun film, composed for contemporary dance and theatre, and are currently learning the tradition of the extinct Finnish bagpipes. The night is part of the Soundhouse Winter Festival at the Traverse, Scotland's new writing theatre.
