Monthly social ceilidh-dancing night with live music from The Occasionals, suitable for all ages.
The Scots Music Group are back at St Brides Centre on Saturday 31 October, their regular monthly ceilidh get-together. It's the same friendly, informal setup they usually run on the final Saturday of the month, and it's open to all ages and nationalities.
If you've never been, the format is straightforward: a caller explains each dance and walks everyone through the steps at the start, and there's a following of friendly regulars on hand to help newcomers find their feet. The music comes from The Occasionals, led by Freeland Barbour, with Kevin Macleod, Malcolm Jones — formerly of Runrig — and Mairi Campbell. They're joined by the 'ceilidh regulars and groupies' known as the Occasionalettes. Beyond the dancing, the night is described as an energetic, social way to keep fit and the brain healthy.
St Brides Centre itself is a community-led charity in the heart of Edinburgh, running a cafe, meeting rooms and a community garden alongside its all-age activities. The ceilidh is one of those regular fixtures that brings people together across the city.
