Screening of the 2021 drama 'Lingui, The Sacred Bonds' by director Mahamat Saleh Haroun, presented by the Institut français d'Écosse.
Institut français d'Écosse is screening Lingui, The Sacred Bonds on Friday 19 March, a drama written and directed by Mahamat Saleh Haroun. It's a 2021 film, and the screening is presented by the centre itself.
The story follows Amina and her 15-year-old daughter, Maria. Maria becomes pregnant and wants an abortion, which puts them both in an impossible position in a country where it isn't an option. It's an internationally co-produced drama, and Haroun wrote and directed it.
If you haven't spent much time there, the Institut français d'Écosse is a cultural centre that's been promoting French language and culture in Edinburgh and across Scotland since 1946. It's part of the wider Institut Français network, and the programme runs the whole way from French courses, talks, live music and theatre, and film screenings to library collections, children's activities and festivals. Every room in the building bears the name of a remarkable figure. The centre celebrated its 80th anniversary in 2026 with a week of events, including a mapping projection called 80 Years Of The Institut français d'Écosse.
