Rob Newman brings his stand-up show '21st Century Survival Guide' to The Stand Comedy Club, following his novel 'Intelligence'.
Rob Newman is back at The Stand Comedy Club on Sunday 28 February, with a new show called 21st Century Survival Guide. It comes on the heels of his new novel, Intelligence, and the title tells you exactly where he's heading: a survival guide for the century we're currently in.
It's described as a whistlestop tour of new ideas, with a good deal of it looking back at what history suggests happens when the rich and powerful go ape. From there, he brings it right up to the present, pulling in oil shocks, chatbots and billionaire Tech Bros. If that sounds like a lot to cover in one go, that's the point — it's a wide-ranging look at the state of things, rather than a narrow focus on one particular grievance.
Newman's a well-known name on the circuit, and the reviews for this one have been strong. The Scotsman gave it five stars and called him 'a Superhero whose Superpower was Comedy'; The Guardian gave it four and described him as 'one of comedy's most skilled performers'; and The Sunday Times went for 'the funniest comedian I have ever seen... passionate, chaotically brilliant'. Between them, they paint a picture of a performer who can hold a room with both the technical side of the craft and a fair bit of genuine energy.

It's an over-18s show, so keep that in mind if you're thinking of bringing anyone younger. Doors open at 15:00, and the set runs from 16:00 to 17:50 — roughly 110 minutes, so it's a proper length of a show rather than a short slot. If you're planning to head in early, the doors open an hour before the start, giving you plenty of time to get sorted before he takes the stage.
