Award-winning Scottish comedian and historian Daniel Downie leads a comedy whisky tasting, pairing the history and distilling process of Scotch malt whisky with a flight of four malts.
Daniel Downie brings his Mountebank Comedy Whisky Tasting to The Stand Comedy Club on Thursday 23 October, a session that pairs the distilling process of Scotch malt whisky with the drink's history and cultural significance to Scotland. You'll work your way through a flight of four malts, each from a different distilling region, so it's as much about the tasting as it is about the talk.
Downie is an award-winning Scottish comedian and historian with an MLitt in Scottish history from the University of Dundee, and he's not alone on stage: he's joined by his K9 sidekick Brahan, known as 'The Bonnie Prince'. The two have a bit of a track record together. In 2019, Downie launched the Mountebank Comedy Walk of Edinburgh, the city's first comedy walking tour, which later became the only Scottish experience to make TripAdvisor's 'Top 10 Experiences in the UK'. This tasting followed in early 2025, taking the same blend of history and comedy and applying it to the bottle rather than the street.
Outside of this, Downie is a regular on the Scottish comedy circuit and has brought several sell-out Fringe shows about Scotland to the city. He also hosts the Mountebank History of Scotland podcast, where he pokes fun at the hysterical side of the nation's past, from William Wallace to Susan Boyle. The Scotsman called him 'compulsory' for any Fringe visit.
