A hands-on sewing workshop for children aged 8 to 14 to learn practical techniques and create their own projects.
Remode Collective are running a kids sewing workshop at Out Of The Blue Drill Hall on Sunday 15 October, from 9:00am to 3:00pm. It's a full day's session aimed at ages 8 to 14, and the whole thing is hands-on rather than just watching someone else do it.
The focus is on practical sewing techniques that kids can actually use to repair, create and customise their own things. If they've never touched a machine before, that's fine — beginners start with the basics, learning how to thread and use a sewing machine and how to mend by hand. Once they've got the hang of that, they move on to making something of their own, like a pencil case, a cushion cover or a small accessory, and then add their own personality to it with embroidery, beading or decorating. The idea is that they walk away not just with a finished project, but with skills they can keep using at home.
One thing that makes it work for younger ones is the group size: they keep the numbers small so every participant gets plenty of one-on-one support throughout the day. It's a good fit for a child who's curious about making things but might be a bit tentative about starting on their own. By the end, they'll have gone from threading a needle to finishing a project they've made from scratch.
