Screening of award-winning German short films chosen by International Short Film Week Regensburg, followed by a Q&A with the festival's co-director Amrei Keul, for over-18s.
German Shorts Night comes to Summerhall on Friday 13 November, as part of the wider Edinburgh Short Film Festival which runs from 6 to 21 November at Filmhouse. The night is a selection of contemporary and award-winning German shorts, all curated by International Short Film Week Regensburg. After the screening, there's a Q&A with the festival's co-director, Amrei Keul, who'll be there to talk through the films.
Regensburg is one of Germany's biggest and oldest dedicated short film festivals. It started in 1994 as a modest cinematic experiment and grew into a fixture of the international short film circuit, so the selection comes from a festival that's been doing this for over thirty years. The programme itself covers a fair bit of ground: quirky stop-motion, thought-provoking drama, and edgy comedy, rather than sticking to one particular mood. It's a mixed bill, so you'll get a few different styles in one sitting.
One thing to keep in mind is that the night is strictly for over-18s. There are content warnings for discussions of trauma, mental illness, and death, so it's not a light evening. If those are things you'd rather avoid, this probably isn't the one for you. If you're fine with them, it's a good way to see a range of German short filmmaking in one go, with someone from the festival there to answer questions afterwards.
