A tragicomedy by Jonny Donahoe exploring the toxic relationship between a mother and her adult son, directed by Ben Standish.
Contact is running at the Traverse Theatre from Tuesday 13 to Saturday 17 October, with a matinee performance at 1pm every day. It's a family tragicomedy written by Jonny Donahoe, who also wrote Every Brilliant Thing and has been nominated for both a Tony and an Olivier Award. The play is a taut two-hander that turns on the toxic relationship between a mother and her adult son, and the generational conflict that drives many to choose 'no contact' over reconciliation. It pulls in themes of generational trauma and domestic violence, served with Donahoe's trademark wit.
Blythe Duff plays the mother, a lonely Gen X-er, opposite Mark Barrett as her Gen Z son. The production is directed by Ben Standish, with set design by Gillian Argo and lighting by Ross Nurney. It's co-presented with OneRen in association with Trolley Problem Productions, and forms part of the Traverse's 'A Play, A Pie and A Pint' season. Critics have called it 'emotionally charged', praising its emotional realism while questioning its dramatic impact and its ending.
