Scottish Ballet's playful and gender-fluid retelling of the Cinderella story, set in a family-run emporium at the turn of the 20th century.
Scottish Ballet bring Cinders! back to the Festival Theatre from 11 to 24 December, their playful retelling of the Cinderella story. It's set at the turn of the 20th century in Cinders' family-run emporium, where the new proprietor Mrs Thorne and her three ghastly children turn the shop into a garish version of its former self.
The production's signature twist is its gender fluidity: on some nights Cinders is a woman swept off her feet by her Prince, on others a man swept off his feet by his Princess, and some performances feature a male Cinders meeting his Prince or a female Cinders meeting her Princess. The choreography is by Christopher Hampson CBE, with music by Sergei Prokofiev performed live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra, and costumes and sets by Elin Steele. The Telegraph called it 'inspired and witty... a surprising delight', and The Guardian described it as 'simply beautiful... a festive treat'.
