Evening conversation between Ewan Graham and Kirsty Watt, with live audience questions, on whether accessible design is ever genuinely achievable.
boom saloon and A&DS are teaming up at the Edinburgh Futures Institute on Wednesday 25 November for Can you design accessibility?, an evening that asks whether accessible design is ever genuinely achievable or if it stays an aspiration bolted on at the end — and who gets shaped by the answer.
It's presented by boom saloon, the Scottish creative social-impact publisher behind the boom saloon calling series, in collaboration with A&DS, the national design agency. They've pitched it as one of the few rooms in Edinburgh where product, service and physical design arguments sit together, and it's aimed at designers, product people and researchers who keep hitting accessibility as a late-stage problem.
The night doesn't start with an introduction. A phone rings and a pre-recorded conversation between Ewan Graham of HawkinsBrown and Kirsty Watt of boom saloon unfolds on screen, before moving to a live call with speaker Gerry King. The audience shapes that second part by texting in questions in real time, and the whole thing closes in the room, with Edinburgh-based contributors joining the audience in person.
