Small-group workshop with Remode Collective to learn basic sewing and mending as a sustainable way to extend the life of clothes.
Remode Collective are running a basic sewing workshop at Out of the Blue Drill Hall on Wednesday 28 October, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. It's a three-hour session held in a small group, so you're not just one of fifty people in a hall; you'll be working close enough to the tutors to actually get your questions answered. You can work with either a sewing box or a sewing machine, so it doesn't matter if you're strictly hand-stitching or want to get a machine humming.
The session is built around the basics: mending, altering and making your own garments. The collective frames sewing as a sustainable, eco-friendly way to cut garment waste and extend the life of your clothes, which is a nice way to think about it — instead of tossing something because of a split seam or a missing button, you just fix it. They describe the workshop as a way to grow your confidence and get you started on your own, so you'll leave with a few practical skills you can actually use at home.
Remode Collective are a group of artists based at the Drill Hall, and the venue itself is the home of Out of the Blue, an independent cultural social enterprise and one of Scotland's leading community, cultural and arts development organisations. Since it started, its mission has been to open doors for artists and others who face barriers to creativity, giving them a place to meet, work, participate, learn and develop skills. The Trust also runs craft markets and exhibitions by local makers, so the whole place is built around making things.
