A 14-piece classical ensemble reimagines rock and metal hits as delicate classical pieces performed in a hauntingly atmospheric candlelit setting.
The Rock Orchestra plays the Temple Hoyne Buell Theatre on Saturday, October 10, at 8 PM. It's a 14-piece classical ensemble that takes rock and metal hits and reimagines them as delicate classical pieces, performed in a candlelit setting. The show runs about an hour, with the stage surrounded by candles.
The setlist pulls from a wide range of rock and metal. You'll hear versions of songs by the Rolling Stones, My Chemical Romance, Linkin Park, Guns N Roses, AC/DC, The Cranberries, Led Zeppelin, Queen, and Metallica, all stripped down and rearranged for strings. The ensemble was founded by Nathan Reed, and they've played over 400 shows across 10 countries, drawing more than 700,000 guests on US and international tours.
Reed describes the sound as a blend of delicate melodies and graceful strings that builds into a "wall of sound that goes straight through your chest." That's a good way to frame it: the pieces start quiet and lean into the strings, then build up into something much larger. The candlelit staging is a big part of the experience, too, and it's what gives the whole thing its particular mood.
