A Victorian spiritualism and vampire folklore celebration with live DJ sets, drag performances, spirit tastings, tarot readings, and a screening of The Unknown.
Four Mile Historic Park brings back Spirits & Spirits on Saturday, October 24, from 7 PM to 11 PM. It's an adults-only night that pulls from two Victorian obsessions: spiritualism—the 19th-century belief that the living could talk to the dead—and the era's vampire folklore, from Varney the Vampire (1874) and Carmilla (1872) to Dracula (1897). The whole evening is built around that intersection of the ghostly and the gothic.
The program is a long list of things to do. There are live DJ sets and drag performances, alongside insect pinning demonstrations and spirit tastings. You'll find s'mores and campfire stories, a mourning ceremony demonstration, and a screening of The Unknown (1927), directed by Tod Browning and starring Lon Chaney, preceded by a short interview with Chaney's grandson, Ron Chaney. It's a mix of the theatrical, the historical, and the just plain odd.
Your ticket also gets you into Bright Nights, the park's signature event, which features ghost stories told among supersized glowing flora and fauna. On top of that, there are tarot readings available on a first-come, first-served basis, face painting, food trucks, and a Metaphysical Marketplace. Between the drag, the silent film, and the campfire stories, there's plenty to keep you busy across the four hours.
