Screening of the new 4K restoration of the 1964 Japanese ghost story film Kwaidan, directed by Masaki Kobayashi, at the SIE Film Center.
SIE Film Center is screening a new 4K restoration of Kwaidan, the 1964 anthology by Masaki Kobayashi, starting Friday, October 9. It's a quartet of ghost stories adapted from Lafcadio Hearn's collections of Japanese folklore, and the restoration brings it back to the big screen in a way that does the visuals justice.
For a while, Kobayashi was known for sober political dramas and socially minded period pieces. Kwaidan was a sharp turn in a different direction. It's a rapturously stylized film, built around colorful, surreal sets and luminous cinematography that lean into the supernatural. The stories themselves draw on tales of demonic comeuppance and spiritual trials—the kind of folk horror that works best when you can see every detail of the set design.
The screening is presented by SIE Film Center, the year-round cinematic home of Denver Film. Denver Film is a 501(c)(3) cultural arts organization and the only nonprofit theater in Colorado. Since 1978, they've worked to promote film as both an art form and a civic forum, and they run the annual award-winning Denver Film Festival in November alongside their summer series, Film on the Rocks at Red Rocks Amphitheatre.
