I Follow Rivers Member Preview

Denver Art Museum is hosting a member preview of I Follow Rivers: Indigenous Worlds in Latin America on Friday, November 6, from 11 AM to 5 PM. It's a first look at what's being called the largest exhibition in the U.S. to ever feature modern and contemporary Latin American artists who are Indigenous. The show spans from the early twentieth century to the present, pulling together more than 100 works by more than 50 artists. Most of the pieces come from the museum's own collection, supplemented by selected loans and works commissioned specifically for the exhibition.

The range of media is wide—painting, video, sculpture, installation, and sound—and the artists identify with nations including the Wapichana, Guaraní, Ishír, Huni Kuin, and Kaqchikel Maya. Their work looks at land, community, memory, identity, Indigenous rights, and gender. Among the names on the list are Claudia Alarcón, Denilson Baniwa, Edgar Calel, Seba Calfuqueo, Martín Chambi, Rosa Elena Curruchich, Venuca Evanán, Claudia Martinez Garay, Sheroanawe Hakihiiwe, Julia Isídrez, MAHKU (Huni Kuin Art Movement), António Pichillá, Abel Rodriguez, and Kira Xonorika.

Curator-at-Large Raphael Fonseca says the exhibition challenges the geographic assumptions in the term 'Latin America' itself. To go along with it, the museum is releasing a companion guide authored by Fonseca, featuring an essay by Bolivian artist, poet, and scholar Elvira Espejo Ayca. It's the museum's first publication dedicated to its contemporary Indigenous Latin American art collection.

The preview is free for members, but it's for members only and registration is required. You'll find it in the Martin Building on Level 1.
