Reading of calaveritas, the humorous poems of the Día de Muertos tradition, by readers from the newspaper El Comercio de Colorado, within the museum's Momentos de Memoria initiative.
El Comercio de Colorado brings a reading of calaveritas to the Denver Art Museum on Saturday, November 7, from 11 AM to 2 PM. The reading is part of Momentos de Memoria, the museum's Día de Muertos initiative, and it's held in the Creative Hub on Level 1 of the Martin Building.
If you're not familiar with calaveritas, they're the short, humorous poems that are a staple of the Día de Muertos tradition. They're meant to be read aloud, and that's exactly what's happening here: readers from the newspaper will be taking them through the air. It's a lighthearted side of a holiday that's usually talked about in more solemn terms.
The reading sits inside a larger project. Momentos de Memoria was conceived by Manuel Ferreira, a specialist in Latin American art interpretation, and it turns the museum into an ofrenda—an altar. Throughout the three buildings, there are stations where you can pick up a colorful paper skull and place it beside an artwork that reminds you of someone or something you've lost. Last year, visitors left around 1,200 skulls beside some 600 works. The museum's own ofrenda in the Creative Hub remembers staff members who have died, so the space itself is tied to the same theme as the poems.
