Book club meeting to read Epitaph for a Spy by Eric Ambler, an interwar spy and detective novel.
Cloak & Lager Espionage Book Club meets at Station 26 Brewing on Tuesday, October 13, to talk through Epitaph for a Spy by Eric Ambler. This month the club is working its way through interwar spy and detective fiction, and Ambler is one of the big names of that era. If you haven't read him before, he's known for moving the spy novel away from the gentleman-adventurer trope and toward something more grounded and political.
Epitaph for a Spy follows a man who's just on vacation when he's falsely accused of espionage. From there, he's compelled to identify the true spy, which is a classic setup that Ambler handles with a bit more wit than you might expect from a story about being framed. It's 272 pages long, and the club describes it as a breezier read than some of the heavier titles that usually fall under the espionage umbrella. If you're looking for something you can actually finish in a week or two, this is a good place to start.
