Monthly free gallery tour for visitors with early-stage Alzheimer's or dementia and their care partners, led by a specially trained guide.
Art & About returns to the Denver Art Museum on Thursday, November 12, from 1 PM to 2:30 PM. It's a gallery tour designed for visitors with early-stage Alzheimer's or dementia and their care partners, who experience and discuss art together on a tour led by a specially trained guide. The themes change every month, so each session brings you to a different part of the museum's collection.
Depending on the month, the tour might take you through the Hamilton Building, the Martin Building, or The Kirkland, which the museum added more recently. Across its 12 collections, the museum holds more than 70,000 works, and the Art & About tours draw from that depth. The program is part of the museum's Creative Aging suite, which is built around research showing that regular arts participation can improve the health and well-being of older adults.
It's one of several accessibility-focused programs the museum runs. There are Sensory-Friendly Mornings, sensory tools for visitors, online exhibition guides, and group tours for visitors with disabilities. If you're already familiar with the museum, you might recognize these as part of a broader effort to make the galleries more welcoming for people with different needs.
