Jazz-fusion bassist and producer Thundercat performs live with electronic duo 54 Ultra at The Bomb Factory.
Thundercat plays The Bomb Factory on Sunday, November 8, with 54 Ultra opening the bill. It's a Dallas date on his tour, and the show starts at 8 PM.
If you've followed him for a while, you know his records are built on a huge circle of collaborators. His recent album It Is What It Is brought in Ty Dolla $ign, Childish Gambino, Flying Lotus, Lil B, Kamasi Washington, Steve Lacy, BADBADNOTGOOD, Louis Cole, and Zack Fox. That's a long list of names from across R&B, hip-hop, and jazz, and they all left their mark on the record. The live set will draw from that material, and with 54 Ultra opening, the whole night stays in that same orbit.
He's been working with a similar crowd on his other releases, too. Distracted, which came out on Brainfeeder, features Mac Miller, Willow Smith, Tame Impala, A$AP Rocky, and Channel Tres. Between the two, you can see the range he pulls from—soul, funk, and psych-pop all rubbing shoulders. When you hear the records, it's easy to forget how many different voices are actually in there, but the credits tell the story: he's as much a curator of a scene as he is a bass player.
