The Dallas Symphony Orchestra presents Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 and the Swan Lake suite, with Fabio Luisi conducting and Tom Borrow on piano.
The Dallas Symphony Orchestra brings Tchaikovsky to the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center over three performances: Friday, Nov. 27, Saturday, Nov. 28, and Sunday, Nov. 29. Fabio Luisi conducts, and pianist Tom Borrow takes the solo. The program pairs Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor with the suite from Swan Lake.
If you've seen Black Swan or Billy Elliott, you've heard Swan Lake—it's one of those pieces of music that has worked its way into the background of movies and pop culture long after it left the ballet stage. The concerto is the other half of the evening, and it's the one that puts the spotlight on the piano. Tom Borrow is the soloist here, and a review cited by the orchestra describes him as a "sensational" artist whose touch is "both light and powerful."
Before each concert, there's a "Prelude" in Horchow Hall—a free, informal pre-concert talk led by local musicians and musicologists. They share stories and insight about the music you're about to hear, and every now and then they bring in surprise guests. The DSO Guild helps sponsor them, and they're open to anyone who wants to get a bit of context before the music starts.
