The Dallas Symphony Orchestra presents a concert of waltzes and virtuoso piano works, featuring Jean-Yves Thibaudet on piano and conducted by Fabio Luisi.
Jean-Yves Thibaudet returns to the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center on Thursday, February 4, for a program that pairs the waltz music of Golden Age Vienna with Liszt's piano writing. He's joined by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Fabio Luisi.
The evening centers on Franz Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 2 in A Major, a work described as fiery and virtuosic yet full of graceful lyricism. Thibaudet, whom Gramophone has called "the most soulful of players," takes the lead on that one. The rest of the program stays in the waltz tradition: Richard Strauss's Suite from Der Rosenkavalier, which culminates in one of music's most sweeping, sublime waltzes, and a selection of waltzes by Johann Strauss Jr., reimagined in Schoenberg's arrangements for chamber orchestra.
If you're the kind of person who likes to know the stories behind the music before the first note even hits, there's a Prelude that evening. It's part of the orchestra's series of free, informal talks led by local musicians and musicologists over at Horchow Hall, designed to open up the context and insights behind the program.
