Post-hardcore and emo band Spite House performs live at the Cheapsteaks venue in Dallas.
Spite House play Cheapsteaks on Friday, October 9, at 7 PM. They're a post-hardcore, emo and punk band from Montreal, Canada, and this is a single-bill night with them as the only act on the program.
The band grew out of a friendship and a shared history. Vocalist Maxime Lajoie, who also plays guitar, says an unexpected death was the spark that led him to start singing in a band with his former friend and schoolmate Marc Tremblay on drums. That pairing developed a writing rhythm that drew on Samiam, Jawbreaker and Seaweed â three names that place them firmly in the melodic, guitar-driven side of the 90s emo and punk tradition. The sound came together when Nabil Ortega joined on bass, and the trio has since built a following around that raw, earnest energy.
If those names aren't familiar, they point toward a particular kind of sound: melodic hooks over distorted guitars, with the emotional weight of the lyrics taking center stage. It's music that doesn't hide its seams, and that's exactly what they've built their reputation on. They describe themselves as a band born out of intuition, and that comes through in the way they play together.
