Concert by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra conducted by Matthew Halls, featuring Sibelius Symphony No. 2, Brahms Schicksalslied and Vaughan Williams Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis.
The Dallas Symphony Orchestra is playing a program of Sibelius, Brahms, and Vaughan Williams at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center on Friday, March 5, Saturday, March 6, and Sunday, March 7, 2027. Matthew Halls is conducting, and the Dallas Symphony Chorus joins in, with Anthony Blake Clark directing the chorus.
The program brings together three distinct voices. Sibelius' Symphony No. 2 in D Major is the big one—the composer described it as "a great river flowing to the sea," and for generations of Finns, it's been heard as their country's quest for freedom from Russian rule. Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis looks back at the mystery and mysticism of English Renaissance sacred music. And Brahms' Schicksalslied (Song of Destiny) sets Friedrich Hölderlin's heaven-storming poem. The chorus is there for the Brahms, so that's where the voices come in.
These concerts are part of the DSO's 2026/27 season, which is built around the idea of inviting audiences to "really listen" in a world of constant noise. If you're the kind of person who likes to know what you're about to hear before the first note hits, there's a pre-concert talk before each evening with Assistant Conductor Shira Samuels-Shragg in Horchow Hall.
