The Dallas Symphony Orchestra presents Schumann's Symphony No. 1 and Brahms' Violin Concerto, performed by Randall Goosby and conducted by Matthias Pintscher.
Randall Goosby returns to the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center for a series of concerts on Friday, January 22, Saturday, January 23, and Sunday, January 24, 2027. He's back with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and the program pairs two heavyweights of the Romantic era: Brahms and Schumann.
Goosby takes the lead on Brahms' Violin Concerto in D Major, a piece that famously took the composer twenty-five years to finish. He wrote it for his close friend, the violinist Joseph Joachim, and that long gestation shows in the writing—it's a massive, demanding work that doesn't rush its ideas. The other half of the bill is Schumann's Symphony No. 1 in B-flat Major, known as the 'Spring' symphony, which Schumann wrote as a tribute to the season's blossoming beauty. It's a bright, energetic contrast to the more patient, sprawling Brahms concerto.
Matthias Pintscher is conducting the orchestra for all three dates. The concerts are part of the DSO's 2026/27 season, so if you're already following the full calendar, this is one of the major stops. Each performance is preceded by a pre-concert talk in Horchow Hall, led by assistant conductor Shira Samuels-Shragg, which goes into the details of the two works before the music starts.
