Texas country music concert by Justin JJ Jones at Smoky Rose.
Justin JJ Jones plays Smoky Rose on Friday, October 9, at 6 PM. He's a Texas country artist from Sulphur Springs who grew up on a family farm and taught himself to sing by echoing off a coffee can and a five-gallon bucket in the barn. He spent years as the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist for the band Barefoot Texans before stepping out on his own.
His sound draws from two distinct Texas traditions. On one side are the country songwriters Hayes Carll, Chris Knight, and Rodney Crowell; on the other, the Red Dirt trailblazers Ray Wylie Hubbard, Jason Boland, and Stoney LaRue. That blend of songwriting and grit has earned him some recognition along the way: he was crowned Grand Champion of the Texas Music Shootout and landed a demo session at Largemouth Studios in China Springs.
He's also shared stages with a good deal of the names he cites as influences, including Jason Boland & The Stragglers, Aaron Watson, and Stoney LaRue, as well as Chris Young and Evan Felker of the Turnpike Troubadours. The real shift came in November 2021 with the birth of his son, Jasper. That became his turning point: he went full-time into music and grew into a rising force in the Northwest scene, playing hundreds of shows a year.
