Internationally touring dance artist Hervé Koubi presents 'What the Day Owes to the Night', a fusion of capoeira, martial arts, urban and contemporary dance performed by twelve male dancers.
Hervé Koubi brings What the Day Owes to the Night to the Winspear Opera House on Saturday, March 27, at 7:30 PM. The performance is presented by TITAS/Dance Unbound in association with the AT&T Performing Arts Center as part of their 2026/2027 season.
Koubi is an internationally touring dance artist and a TITAS favorite whose work draws on his Algerian roots. What the Day Owes to the Night is his signature piece, and it's a hybrid that pulls from several different worlds: capoeira, martial arts, urban dance, and contemporary movement. On stage, twelve male dancers from around the world flip, fly, and seem to defy gravity, moving together in a way that blends those styles into one. The imagery takes its cues from Orientalist paintings and the intricate stone patterns of Islamic architecture, so the visual side of the show is as much a part of it as the dancing.
If you're not familiar with his background, Koubi's work often looks back toward his Algerian roots, and this piece is no exception. The mix of capoeira and martial arts gives it an athletic, high-energy feel, while the contemporary dance side keeps it grounded in the theater. With twelve dancers on stage at once, it's a full-company piece rather than a small ensemble, and the way they move together is a big part of the draw.
