Concert by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra featuring Grieg's Piano Concerto in A minor and Saint-Saëns' Organ Symphony, with the Lay Family Concert Organ.
Emmanuel Tjeknavorian leads the Dallas Symphony Orchestra at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center on Thursday, May 27, Friday, May 28, and Saturday, May 29, 2027. All three performances start at 7:30 PM.
The program pairs two heavyweights: Grieg's Piano Concerto in A minor and Saint-Saëns's Symphony No. 3 in C minor, better known as the Organ Symphony. Grieg's concerto is often described as a musical love letter to Norway, and it's the pianist Kiron Atom Tellian who takes it on, a player noted for his combination of sensitivity and taste.
Saint-Saëns's Organ Symphony is the night's real center of gravity. It was his final symphony and something of a self-portrait in sound, channeling his lifelong love of sacred music and unleashing the full, thunderous power of the Lay Family Concert Organ. Saint-Saëns wrote of it, "I gave everything to it; what I have here accomplished I will never achieve again." Bradley Hunter Welch is on the organ for that part, and the symphony's title comes from the organ's prominent role.
