Concert by the Toronto-based electro-groove, jazz and funk band Four80East, featuring Jeff Kashiwa, at the Dallas Zoo.
Four80East play the Dallas Zoo on Saturday, October 10, with saxophonist Jeff Kashiwa joining them on stage. It's a Toronto band coming down to Dallas, and they're bringing a sound that doesn't fit into one easy box.
They describe what they do as electro-groove-jazz-funk, and that's a fair way to put it. The music pulls from a few different places at once: funk, jazz, acid-jazz, and electro-jazz. If you've spent any time with those styles, you've got a good idea of where they land—somewhere between a jazz club and a dance floor, with a groove that stays front and center. It's the kind of set that works just as well if you're there to listen as if you're there to move.
Rob DeBoer and Tony Grace front the group, and Jeff Kashiwa adds his saxophone to the mix for this one. Kashiwa is a well-known name in the contemporary jazz world, so having him on the bill adds another layer to the evening. Between the band's electro-groove foundation and Kashiwa's horn, the set should lean into that intersection of jazz and dance music they've built their sound around.
